What is sports betting?
Sports betting is wagering money on the outcome of sporting events. It is one of the oldest forms of gambling, with roots in ancient Greece and Rome. Today sports betting is a global industry worth hundreds of billions of dollars.
What sets sports betting apart from casino games is that knowledge can actually provide an edge. An experienced football analyst may have better insight into a team's form than a bookmaker. But it is important to understand that the bookmaker's margin (vig or juice) is always present, and that consistently better judgement than the market is required to profit in the long run.
Odds formats
Odds can be presented in three formats: Decimal odds (European format), Fractional odds (British format) and Moneyline (American format).
Decimal odds: The simplest format. Odds of 2.50 means you receive 2.50 for every unit wagered (including the stake back). Payout = stake × odds.
Fractional odds: Odds of 3/2 means you win 3 units for every 2 units wagered. Payout = stake × (numerator/denominator).
Moneyline: Positive numbers (+150) show profit per 100 wagered. Negative numbers (-200) show what you must wager to win 100.
How are odds set?
Odds are set based on historical data, team form, statistics and the amount of money wagered on each outcome. They can change right up to kick-off as new information comes in.
- A key player is reported injured or doubtful.
- Large sums are placed on one particular outcome, and the odds are adjusted to balance the risk.
- Weather conditions change — rain or strong wind affects some sports more than others.
Bet types
Single: You bet on one outcome in one match.
Accumulator (multi): You combine several outcomes on one slip. All must come in for a payout, but the combined odds multiply — higher potential return, higher risk.
System: You cover several combinations of the same selections on one slip. The slip can pay out even if not every selection wins, but the stake is spread across multiple lines.
Asian handicap: Instead of betting straight on home win, draw or away win, the match is adjusted with a goal handicap. A team might start the match at -1 — meaning they must win by at least two goals for the bet to count as won.
Markets
Beyond match winner there are several specific markets:
- Correct score: You predict the exact result, e.g. 2–1. Higher odds, lower probability of winning.
- First goalscorer: Who scores first in the match.
- Over/under goals: Whether the total number of goals in the match is over or under a given line, often 2.5.
- Corners and cards: Number of corner kicks or yellow cards in the match.

Live betting
During the match the odds change continuously based on what is happening on the pitch. You can bet on new outcomes — next goal, next set, next corner — while the match is in progress.

Live odds react quickly to events — a red card, an injury, an early goal — and the margins here are often higher than on pre-match odds. It is therefore important to understand what you are betting on, not just follow your gut.
Leagues and tournaments
The Premier League, Champions League and major international tournaments are among the most traded markets. Odds on these are updated continuously throughout the season, with dedicated markets for each competition — from match result to number of goals and player-specific bets.
Large international tournaments such as the World Cup and European Championship attract significantly more volume than a regular league round. Interest rises further when a home nation is involved.
Football odds
Premier League odds
Arsenal are the clear favourites for the 26/27 Premier League title at odds of 2.25, well ahead of Manchester City (4.50), Liverpool (6.00) and Manchester United (8.00). The gap to the rest of the field is significant: Chelsea (9.00) and Tottenham (21.00) are next in line, while clubs like Brighton, Bournemouth and Everton sit at 150–250 for the title.
Odds on individual matches change continuously throughout the season based on results, injuries and form. 1X2, over/under and Asian handicap are the most widely used markets on each fixture.
Champions League odds
The Champions League field is far more open than the Premier League. Paris Saint-Germain are favourites at 6.00, but right behind them come Arsenal (7.40), Bayern München (7.40), Manchester City (8.00), Real Madrid (8.00) and Barcelona (8.00) — six clubs clustered within a narrow odds range. There is no runaway favourite of the kind often seen in domestic leagues.
Further down the field you find Liverpool (11.00), Inter (29.00), Atlético Madrid (35.00) and Borussia Dortmund (40.00). With such an open top tier, individual results in the group stage can move the odds significantly.
Eliteserien odds
The top of Eliteserien is tight: Bodø/Glimt lead with 41 points, just one point ahead of Viking (40 points) after 17 matches played. Tromsø (34 points) and Molde (27 points) follow further back, but both still have a European place within reach.
At the bottom, Aalesund and Start are fighting to avoid direct relegation, while the team in 14th place must go through a relegation play-off against a club from the OBOS-ligaen.
With the title race still open between two clubs, and both promotion and relegation battles in full swing, odds on individual Eliteserien fixtures are in constant flux heading into the final stretch of the season.

Bookmaker margin
The bookmaker's margin (also called vig, juice or overround) is the built-in advantage bookmakers hold. It ensures that the bookmaker's total payouts are lower than the stakes collected, regardless of the outcome.
For example: in a match between two evenly matched teams, both should have odds of 2.00 (50% probability). But bookmakers might set odds of 1.90 on both. This creates a margin of approximately 5%. To profit from sports betting over time you must consistently identify odds that are higher than the actual probability — this is called value betting.
Basic strategy
Value betting is the core of profitable sports betting: finding bets where the odds are higher than the actual probability of the outcome. This requires thorough analysis and discipline.
Bankroll management is equally important: set aside a dedicated bankroll for betting and never wager more than 1–5% of the bankroll on a single bet. This protects you against inevitable losing streaks.
Specialise. It is easier to have an edge in a narrow market (for example Norwegian top-flight football) than in the Premier League, where bookmakers have very good information.
