Baccarat

Baccarat is a card game with roots in 15th and 16th-century Italy and France. It was long regarded as a game for the aristocracy and the wealthy — James Bond plays baccarat, not blackjack, in the early films. Today baccarat is one of the most-played table games in the world, particularly popular in Asia.

The game's appeal lies in its simplicity: you bet on whether the Player or the Banker will have the hand closest to 9 — or whether it will be a Tie. You make no decisions during the game; everything is automatic. This makes baccarat a pure game of chance, but with one of the lowest house edge figures in a casino.

Baccarat is played with 6–8 decks of cards. Card values are: number cards 2–9 are worth face value, 10 and face cards are worth 0, and aces are worth 1. A hand's value is the sum of the cards modulo 10 — only the last digit counts. A hand with 7 and 8 (sum 15) is worth 5.

The game begins with the Player and Banker each receiving two cards. Depending on the card values, a fixed third-card rule may determine whether either party draws a third card. These rules are fixed and automatic — the player makes no decision.

The Banker bet has a house edge of 1.06% (after commission), making it one of the best bets in a casino. The Player bet has 1.24%. The Tie bet has a house edge of over 14% and should be avoided by the rational player.

Baccarat is a pure game of chance — there are no decisions to make during the game. The only 'strategy' is choosing the right bet type: the Banker bet is mathematically the best, with the lowest house edge. Avoid the Tie bet.

Many players use systems like Martingale (doubling the bet after a loss) or Fibonacci. These systems do not affect the house edge mathematically but can alter the risk profile of a session. No system can overcome the house's mathematical advantage in the long run.
